The Junior Offshore Group, JOG, has announced a major Title Sponsorship deal for its new offshore race, the Illingworth Challenge, named after Captain John Illingworth a founder member of JOG.

Now called the Cognos Illingworth Challenge, the race will start from the JOG line in Cowes on 19th July 2008 and will take competitors west out of the Solent, around Ushant to the finish off La Trinite, a distance of approximately 400 miles.

Cognos, an IBM Company, is the world leader in business intelligence, planning and performance management solutions. "The Cognos ethos is about performance, innovation and achieving excellence in partnership with our customers," said Roy Lee, Marketing Director UK, Middle East and South Africa at Cognos. "This dovetails with the JOG spirit of excellence and achievement through competition, and in supporting the true Corinthian Spirit that is JOG we are looking forward to a thrilling event."

Cognos will be working closely with MarineTrack who will supply a tracker system on board each boat. Real-time race data will be relayed and Cognos will present this on the web through its mid market operational Business Intelligence solution Cognos Now! The website will enable competitors and their followers to stay up-to-the-minute on the position of the contestants throughout the race.

Advertising on your yacht is not permitted and the name of a Yacht shall not promote a commercial enterprise.

The code defines advertising as "the name, logo, slogan, description, depiction, a variation or distortion thereof or any other form of communication that promotes an organisation, person, product, service, brand or idea so as to call attention to it or to persuade persons or organisations to buy, approve or otherwise support it".

2)The use of an engine after the Preparatory signal is not allowed. However JOG General Condition 14 c allows its use in a specific circumstance. A Yacht which is required by the Sailing Instructions to pass through an identity gate and does so, for the first time, after her preparatory signal, may use an engine or tow provided that she:- (i) switches off her engine or drops her tow and then completes a 360 degree turn before starting; (ii) does not start until five minutes after her starting signal (iii) reports the incident on her Declaration Form.

(Usually the above allows for any delay in your arrival for the start).
