JOG Prescriptions

A:A liferaft, as specified in 4.20 (Category 2) shall be carried in Category 3 races.

B:Lifejacket (see 5.01) shall be carried in all Category 2, 3 and 4 races.

  • JOG recommends a splash guard. See EN394
  • JOG recommends a Personal Locator Beacon which should be registered with the appropriate authority.
C: Safety Harness and Safety Lines (tethers) ( see 5.02) shall be carried in all Category 2, 3 and 4 races.
  • A harness and safety line shall comply with EN1095 (ISO 12401) or near equivalent
  • A harness shall be fitted with a crotch strap or thigh straps

D:Flashlights (see 4.07) shall be carried in all Category 2 and 3 races and is a requirement in the Category 4 Weymouth Race only.

Flashlights shall be provided including:-

  • a high-intensity heavy duty handlamp powered by the ship's batteries, instantly available for use on deck and in the cockpit, with spare bulbs.
  • JOG recommends that, in Category 2, 3 Races and the Category 4 Weymouth Race only, each crewmember carries a personal torch or a combination torch/strobe light.

E:Retro Reflective Tape (see 4.18)

This tape (5 cm wide) is available in self-adhesive form from most chandlers. Minimum recommendations: Liferafts, use strips 5 cm x 30 cm. Fix strips around perimeter of canopy at 50 cm intervals; make a cross with two strips on top of the canopy. Fix at least four strips around perimeter of bottom of raft (in case of inversion). Lifejackets, use strips 5 cm x 10 cm. Place at least six strips as high as possible around top of jacket. If jacket is reversible place six strips also around top inside. Lifebuoys, use 5 cm tape. Fix around or on both sides of the body of the buoy at four evenly spaced points. When cutting tape make corners rounded to prevent curling.

F:Lifebuoy (danbuoy) as specified in 4.22.1 shall be carried for all Category 3 races.

G:Immediately prior to the start of every race the owner and/or his representative (yacht skipper) shall ensure that every crew member be fitted with an appropriate lifejacket and safety harness, such lifejacket and harness is to be kept ready for immediate use for the duration of the race. Further, the owner and/or his representative (yacht skipper) shall establish yacht procedures governing the wearing of lifejackets and the use of harness and safety lines and instruct each and every crew member accordingly. It is recommended as a minimum, life jackets and harness are worn with safety lines clipped on during the hours of darkness or in dense fog when above deck and at other times when wind and sea conditions dictate.

H: Outboard engine as specified in 3.28.1.1, is acceptable with associated tanks and fuel supply systems all securely fastened, in Category 3 and 4 Races.
